Vantage Point
Sharing a Lunch, T-Shirt, and Conversation
Are we too busy to see the incredible potential that God sees in each person?
Don Walter is director of Pensions and Benefits USA for the Church of the Nazarene. He shares some perspective and advice for staying calm when the economy seems to be on a roller-coaster ride.

Q: What's your perspective on the recent volatility in the financial markets?
DW: By the time history has given us the ability to look at these days with some perspective, we will have seen that once again violating basic principles of integrity still has consequences. We will have learned, again, the lessons of unregulated and unchecked greed. We will have been reminded how intricately we are all connected in a national and global economy. We will have experienced the collective reality check on our value systems that we in the Baby Boomer generation have so far escaped.

Q: What kind of spiritual reassurance can we find in tough economic times?
DW: The Katy State Park trail system in central Missouri travels within a few yards of the front door of St. Marcus Church near Rhineland, Missouri, built in 1891. According to local information, one can still attend services there at 10:15 A.M. every Sunday. In the 117 years since the church was built, there have been at least three financial panics, two World Wars, and one Great Depression—but the church still stands. At least five significant floods have occurred in the valley where this house of worship was built—but the church still stands. Ironically, even the railroad, which was a fledgling enterprise in 1891 when this little church was built, has disappeared—but the church still stands!
